HEAD OF THE ORGANIZATION

 Fr. Angel C. Calvo

BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION

Katilingban sa Kalambuan Org., Inc. (KKI) is a non-stock non-profit organization founded in 1995, to help marginalized communities cope with the growing socio-economic problems in Zamboanga City.

KKI was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on January 7, 1998. From 1996 to date, KKI has become the foremost non-government organization in Zamboanga City. Initially carrying out the work of community organizing with residents in blighted communities, KKI works with community-based associations on issues affecting landless and homeless urban residents. Thus,  KKI’s Socialized Housing was conceptualized and provided the communities with low-cost housing.

KKI has also amplified its work, empowering women in homeless and landless urban households through advocacy and service delivery programs that combine awareness-raising and capacity building for human rights and providing opportunities for income-generating projects.

KKI also engages with several barangays in Zamboanga City on participatory good governance. This engagement is aimed at a) enhancing capacities of barangay local government officials in fulfilling their mandate as duty bearers by increasing participation of marginalized sectors in governance, and, b) enhancing capacities of marginalized sectors in participating in local governance processes.

While working in demolished affected areas, children were more vulnerable from disruptive encounters between the residence and the lot owner, witnessing unresponsive parents and financial inadequacy to cater to the needs of the children and unending relational problems in the community. Thus, the Children and Youth Development Program (CYDP) was created to protect the children from further abuse as well as to motivate children to engage more in purposive activities.

In 1998, KKI conceptualized a program for street children as a drop-in center within the city proper and eventually licensed to operate as a residential care.
